Chrystia's Colorado Conundrum

On July 21 in Aspen, Colorado, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland took part in a conversation with Matthew Kaminski, the editor-in-chief of POLITICO at the 14 th annual Aspen Security Forum. Freeland made some extremely hyperbolic statements about, well, pretty much everything. If you don’t have time to watch the whole 30-minute segment , I’ve transcribed it here and added minor commentary. The discussion began with a pointed question regarding Canada’s trade relationship with the United States, in particular Canada’s recent decision to move forward with a digital services tax that would impose costs on US tech companies operating in Canada. While Kaminski posed the question in an antagonistic manner, suggesting that Canada was “going rogue” against US corporate interests, Freeland came back with a diplomatic response that led into some answers highlighting the Canadian governments’ overall subservience to Washington (all bold and italics mine): Freeland: “We actually do be...

Canada Retreats From Ukraine

Image
In her remarks during a press conference on June 16, Canada’s Defence Minister Anita Anand referenced Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent appearance in Kiev in order to lay out some of the most cynical and delusional rhetoric of the entire Ukraine conflict: The Prime Minister said, ‘the brave people of Ukraine have reminded the world that democracy is both important enough to die for and strong enough to wind.’ Thirty, fifty, eighty years from now, kids will learn about your victory in history books. You are the tip of the spear that is determining the future of the 21st century. That is what is at stake; nothing less.” (A note here: Anand’s text clearly contained an error, using the word ‘wind’ rather than ‘win’ - the Minister read the text as quoted.) Strong words. Did the Minister back up these words with action? Not exactly. The highlight of the press conference was an announcement that Canada would be sending 15 Leopard 2A4M main battle tanks (MBTs), along with the asso...

CBC Keeps Dreaming

Image
The CBC published an article on Sunday which illustrates why Ukraine is losing its’ army and thus, the war. In the opener, freelance “journalist” Neil Hauer gives the reader some false hope by talking about the current Ukrainian offensive: Last Sunday, Ukrainian forces launched a series of attacks in what Western officials said were likely the opening moves of a wide-ranging summer offensive aimed at recapturing large swaths of Russian-held territory. Combat increased in intensity over the course of the week, as Western-donated main battle tanks were sighted on the battlefield for the first time. That last part is generous to say the least, as multiple videos and photos showed German Leopard tanks and American Bradley fighting vehicles destroyed in bunched-up columns on the southern Zaporozhia line of contact. Moving on, the article then gets to the point: Many of the Ukrainian soldiers taking part in this offensive have been trained by NATO member countries, including Canada —...

What Are We Fighting For?

Image
In fact, the Romans have one inveterate motive for making war upon all nations, peoples and kings: namely, a deep-seated desire for dominion and for riches. … Do you not know that the Romans […] have possessed nothing since the beginning of their existence except what they have stolen - their home, their wives, their lands, their empire? … no laws, human or divine, prevent them from seizing and destroying allies and friends, those near them and those afar off, weak or powerful, and from considering every government which does not serve them, especially monarchies, as their enemies. … it is by audacity, by deceit, and by joining war to war that they have grown great. Following their usual customs, they will destroy everything or perish in the attempt. - Mithridates “Slava Ukraini – as Canadians say these words, we pledge to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes.” The long statement issued from the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday contain...

Shake Hands With The Devil

Image
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an unannounced visit to Kiev on Saturday - CBC covered the story in its’ typical style courtesy of Murray Brewster, offering little to no objectivity. The second photo in the story is of the PM and Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland talking to some soldiers: Very wholesome. But there is another angle of this exchange floating around the web which is revealing: The man with glasses in centre frame is Andriy Melnyk , who in July of 2022 was dismissed from his role as Ukrainian ambassador to Germany after denying the role of Ukraine in the mass murder of Jews during the Second World War. Melnyk is now listed on the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s official website as having the title of Deputy Foreign Minister. CBC’s careful media curation of Trudeau’s visit is no doubt intentional as Ottawa seeks to balance the interests of the Israel lobby against deepening its’ commitment to the US-led proxy war against Russia. Similarly, the Toronto Star did not feat...

At Shangri-La, Canada Raises The Stakes

At the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, an event focusing on defence and security matters in the Asia-Pacific region, Canada’s Defence Minister Anita Anand made it clear: Canada is now fully committed to assisting US efforts to provoke a war in the Pacific. In her speech during the opening day of scheduled sessions, Anand stated that “Canada is boosting its annual naval deployments in the Indo-Pacific from two warships to three. We will now annually deploy an additional warship from our Atlantic Coast, growing Canada’s regional presence, particularly in the Indian Ocean.” In a coordinated demonstration of this commitment, HMCS Montreal shadowed a US destroyer transiting the Taiwan Strait, the narrow waterway that separates the island of Taiwan from mainland China. While the waterway is technically in international waters, it’s not difficult to see how the repeated incursions by multiple foreign militaries close to Chinese borders would cause concern as to the intention of these passag...
